Rick Santorum, move over: Mitt Romney is the anti-porn candidate of 2012

Morality in Media, a right-wing religious organization, is probably best known for its strong stance against "illegal" pornography. I put quotation marks around the word illegal because their definition of illegality is highly suspect. They consider all hardcore pornography (any sexual content showing penetration) to technically be illegal under U.S. obscenity laws – a position long rejected by the federal government.

Today, the group sent out an intriguing message to its followers about Mitt Romney:

I decided to do some digging. First and foremost, the Daily Caller confirms that Morality in Media isn't just making shit up – an aide on the Romney campaign actually released this statement. While it's important to note that Romney himself hasn't really touched the subject, it's almost as noteworthy that the campaign has not retracted what the aide has said.

Of course, Mitt Romney, along with Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, signed Morality in Media's anti-pornography pledge several months ago. While Rick Santorum got most of the heat for this, Mitt Romney's position is still really extreme. Not only does he want to use the federal government to censor pornography, but he also wants each computer to have a mandatory porn blocker installed on it. For real.

During the 2008 election, Mitt Romney even released an advertisement that highlighted his anti-pornography sentiments:

In a day where watching pornography is becoming increasingly mainstream, it seems like an incredibly poor idea for Mitt Romney to continue advocating its criminalization. However, Romney likely feels the need to sure up the socially conservative wing of the Republican base.

Whether this is a genuine desire to put Big Brother between voters between them and their right hands or more sly Romneyonian political posturing, one thing is for sure: a Mitt Romney administration would not be porn friendly. (Except maybe when it comes to fundraising.)
